Gore Vidal has died. He was one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. He was probably my favorite essayist. He also wrote one the first published gay novels to have any success in America. Many of Vidal’s historical novels were controversial and brilliantly written. He was an iconoclast, a scourge, a wit, and a man of letters. His pen will be missed. - RH
